Mahindra KUV100 NXT Overview
When Mahindra & Mahindra MD Dr Pawan Goenka was introducing the 2017 Mahindra KUV100 NXT compact SUV at its launch, he was quick to address the big question: Why such an early refresh for a new model launched only last year. At the time, he noted that shorter timelines are the new norm with manufacturers in India launching new vehicles in quick succession and shortening shelf lives of existing products. There is a push to capture the constantly growing sub-4m compact SUV market. At the same time, the KUV100 NXT facelift is Mahindra’s attempt to capture a market that had hitherto been buying only small cars – the first-time car buyer.
You see, as diverse as its portfolio of utility and sport utility vehicles as well as the odd sedan may have been, Mahindra has never before had a vehicle for this particular customer. And the manufacturer seems to have done things right, as the original Mahindra KUV100 has attracted around 60,000 customers over the past 21 months. With a diverse, new customer base, Mahindra now looks to keep the ball rolling with the 2017 Mahindra KUV100 NXT facelift that gets 40 new features. It is also of essence for Mahindra to popularise its smallest SUV platform, which is slated to become the first Mahindra SUV to be electrfied in a year’s time. And to this end, Mahindra has priced the KUV100 NXT lower than before at Rs 4.39 lakh for the base K2 petrol and Rs 5.39 lakh for the base K2 diesel variant (both prices ex-showroom, Mumbai).
Mahindra KUV100 NXT Exteriors
While most of the design is unchanged, the Mahindra KUV100 NXT has some immediately noticeable changes. The clamshell bonnet isn’t any different from its predecessor, but the headlights, while retaining their basic shape, now feature twin pods, with restyled indicators and DRLs. The front bumper design has been updated to feature a more distinctive air dam, with the reshaped fog-lights getting body colour surrounds. Even the slender nose grille gets more distinct chrome inserts and at the bottom of the bumper, there’s a well defined silver skid plate.
A large silver skid plate can also be found around the back, with a redesigned rear bumper that carries over the styling sensibilities of the front bumper. Extending from the roof is a new, integrated spoiler with what the company calls ‘Aero Corners’ – basically Mahindra-speak for the extended spoiler integrating smoothly down the tailgate. The tailgate too has seen a bit of a redesign, with a new crease running across the back that adds a bit more bulk. Just like with the headlights, the overall shape of the tail lights has been carried over as has their twin-pod layout. However, they get a clear-lens cover that adds a sharp touch of modernity.
Viewed bang-on from the side, the squarish, black plastic-clad wheel arches house new 15-inch dual-tone diamond-cut alloys. If you ask me, even though they’re a far sight better than the smaller 14-inch wheels that debuted on the original KUV100, these 15-inchers still look a bit disproportionate in the car’s profile, especially considering the extra musculature added by the new character line running across the bottom part of the doors. An extra bit of pizzaz that’s noticeable from the side, as well as the front actually, are turn indicators integrated into the new, electrically-operated, power-folding ORVMs.
Generally speaking, while the styling formula hasn’t changed in the grander scheme of things, the KUV100 NXT does look more attractive than before. And in the two-tone paint scheme of our test car, with its black roof, as well as A, B and C pillars, it even felt a bit evocative of the Range Rover Evoque from certain angles.
Mahindra KUV100 NXT Interiors
Just like the Anniversary Edition, this KUV100 NXT gets all-black interiors in the top-spec K8 variant, which enhances the cabin’s appeal. The overall design is familiar, but the centre fascia is redesigned and the layout of the manual air-con buttons is new. The biggest difference here, however, is a 7.0-inch touchscreen borrowed from the TUV300. It gets navigation and is compatible with the Mahindra BlueSense app, but misses out on Android and Apple connectivity. The infotainment menu is very easy to operate, and the touch sensitivity and responsiveness are surprisingly nice. The screen also doubles as a display for the park assist, but the KUV100 misses out on a reversing camera. The other premium feature that this update gets is electric folding mirrors.
Possibly the most unique feature of the KUV100 is its six-seat configuration. But it’s not very practical sitting three abreast in the front, unless the middle passenger is a child. There’s really not much place to speak of with the centre console cutting into knee room in the middle, and shoulder room too is a bit tight. The middle-seat backrest doubles as a really comfortable front armrest and that’s the best way to use it. The KUV100 is as practical as ever with several storage bins including a couple of hidden compartments. The rear-seat space and the 243-litre boot remain unchanged.
Mahindra KUV100 NXT Engine
The KUV100 NXT has the same underpinnings as its predecessor, and we have had good things to say about the monocoque’s limited body roll despite its height, compared to small cars. The NXT features slightly retuned versions of the mFalcon 1.2-litre three-cylinder G80 petrol engine which produces 83PS/115Nm and D75 diesel engine which outputs 78PS/190NM from the earlier KUV100. At the small straights on the Mahindra test track, the NXT stayed stable at speeds up to 135kmph, and it will go beyond that but we will have to wait until we bring it in for a detailed road test to find out. The system works well and will give a 3 to 4 per cent boost to fuel efficiency, which stands at 23kmpl for the diesel and 17.45kmpl for the petrol (ARAI tested). With the D75 diesel motor on the top-spec K8 variant, throttle response feels direct in the switchable Sport mode, while the Eco mode slows it down a fair bit and limits the engine RPM in each of the five gears. The reach to the console mounted joystick-style gear lever is easy. Always staying within view, this lever should prove useful, especially for new drivers while constantly shifting gears in traffic conditions. With the centre seat folded into an armrest, driving through traffic will be less of a chore.
The steering wheel now feels a notch lighter to use at low speeds and does weigh in well as speed increases. However, some vagueness in feel sets in at speeds above 105kmph. That said, the small size makes it a breeze to turn the NXT and U-turns in tight spots will not be a bother at all. Braking with ABS as standard fitment is rapid from speeds in excess of 80kmpkh and the Mahindra feels composed through it. Some more feedback from the pedal would be welcome.
Mahindra KUV100 NXT Riding
The steering is light and quick with every response made to it. Moreover, making a quick U-turn is not at all difficult even if it is done single-handed. The engine is not that special, but it is good enough and the engine responds well to the throttle. Mahindra KUV100 NXT Safety
This is one area where we can wholeheartedly say that Mahindra has done an excellent job. Just like the earlier car, ABS and EBD come as standard across all the variants. However, this time around, even dual front airbags are included on all trim levels except the base K2 model, which still gets them as an option though.

Mahindra KUV100 NXT Verdict
The KUV100 is a very practical and spacious car that’s fairly easy to drive. And the option of carrying six passengers is a huge draw for buyers looking for a budget family car. With this facelift, the KUV finally gets some premium features that other cars in this segment have been offering for a while now. Sure, its proportions are still a bit out of kilter, but Mahindra has managed to clean up the styling to a great extent and that has made the design of the KUV100 NXT a lot easier to digest. It’s well-priced too, and your money goes a fair way with all the features on offer. With the KUV100, Mahindra has taken a big step forward. It’s still not quite there but is definitely closer to the competition now.
