Maruti Suzuki Ciaz Overview
Ever since it was launched in 2014, the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz has been one of the best-selling models in its segment. In fact, till date over 2.2 lakh units of the Ciaz have been sold till date and currently it has a market share of 34 per cent in the compact sedan segment which has some tough competition. The Maruti Suzuki Ciaz had a classic look to it but it was getting long in the tooth. It was about time for Maruti Suzuki to update the Ciaz and so it did! The company launched the the Ciaz Facelift in India at compelling prices (more on that later). This is the first significant update that the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz has received since it was launched four years ago. So, how is the new Ciaz different from the old model and is it better? We spend some time with the 2018 Ciaz facelift and here’s our review. Maruti Suzuki Ciaz price range in India is between 8,02,179/-to 12,01,563/, check for detail pricing of Maruti Suzuki Ciaz in Carzprice
Maruti Suzuki Ciaz Design
The Ciaz Facelift gets a sleeker nose with a new grille, a new design for the 16-inch alloy wheels, extra chrome detailing, an updated design for the tail lamps and inside the cabin, wood grain inserts and a new 4.2-inch multi-information display. Most importantly, a new 1,462cc petrol engine replaces the outgoing 1,373cc petrol K14B engine. That’s not all either, for the first time, the Smart Hybrid technology sees use on the petrol and even that system gets slight tweaking to offer better functionality.
Even more classy now, thanks to the simple black grille that stretches between the headlights. Look closely and you’ll see the gloss black pins that make the diamond-grille, and the front of the car appear even wider than before. The shape of the headlights remains the same but a switch to LED projectors, a strip of LED daytime running lights and LED fog lights does make the front end look contemporary. There’s a large serving of chrome around the fog lamps in front, and the reflectors in the rear bumper. Whilst not particularly creative, it does freshen the look of the car. The rear brake lights get clever LED combination detailing.
Maruti Suzuki Ciaz Cabin
While the exterior is snazzier and new, the interior hasn’t really changed. It’s still the only car in the segment with enough cabin space to make the Honda City nervous and a big 510-litre boot to match. Also, while the interior is more functional than funky, it’s classy nonetheless. However, look closer and you spot a few experience enhancers. Rear seat owners, a big demographic for the Ciaz, will be happy to note that the sedan now gets adjustable rear headrests.Apart from the new faux wood, you also notice that the right side stalk of the steering wheel isn’t blank anymore. That’s because the Ciaz now gets cruise control.
Also, petrol Ciaz buyers get a cool new instrument cluster, complete with a 4.2-inch TFT colour MID. Apart from the usual trip info, range and average fuel efficiency readouts, it now features some cool displays too. There’s the power/torque graphical display we’ve seen in the Baleno, a graph showing your acceleration and braking patterns and another that shows the SHVS system in action like we’ve seen in proper hybrids like the Camry and Accord. Why is this MID exclusive to the petrol Ciaz? Well, because the SHVS here is a first since this new system adds a lithium-ion battery to the equation. It’s also why the 2018 Ciaz petrol got so much more expensive. The lithium-ion battery is an import, at least until the Suzuki-Toshiba battery factory in Gujarat is operational. This battery enables better energy storage during brake energy regeneration and more torque assist during acceleration. And that’s not all that’s new in the petrol Ciaz.
Maruti Suzuki Ciaz Engine
Along with a fresh design, Maruti Suzuki also introduced a new petrol engine which is a 1.5-litre unit with Suzuki’s smart hybrid technology. This is the first time that Maruti has introduced its SHVS system on a petrol engine. The new engine displaces 1,462 cc and pumps out 103.25 bhp at 6,000 rpm and churns out peak torque of 138 Nm at 4,400 rpm. There is the 5-speed manual and the old 4-speed automatic gearbox on offer as well.(The new 1.5-litre K15 petrol engine on the Ciaz Facelift replaces the earlier 1.4-litre unit. It gets mild hybrid tech as well)
We would have loved to see a new automatic gearbox but Maruti decided to stick with the old one on the 2018 Maruti Suzuki Ciaz facelift. The new 2018 Ciaz with the new petrol engine has claimed fuel efficiency of 21.56 kmpl for the manual variant and 20.28 kmpl on the automatic variant. We drove only the Ciaz facelift petrol as the diesel engine remains the same as before.
Maruti Suzuki Ciaz Rideing
As it always was, the ride quality of the Ciaz is pliant and trades side-to-side body control for the ability to soak up bad roads. On some of the more badly designed speed breakers in Bangalore (of which there are many!), we heard the bottom of the car scrape. Easing to a crawl fixed that, but we expect most cars to touch on those monstrosities. The steering, while a little heavy at initial turn-in for slow speed U-turns, weighs up perfectly for city and highway use, offering a solid feel of confidence. The brakes are perhaps too progressive and a little more initial bite would be appreciated, though there is the regenerative braking system to take account of.
On the highway, the car takes time to build up speed. The Maruti Suzuki Ciaz was never the one for spirited driving, but a little more urgency from the engine would have been welcome. Although, it can happily cruise at triple digits speeds all day and then some more. The engine feels quite refined and there is hardly any noise seeping into the cabin at city speeds. The car retains its comfortable ride quality and good handling abilities.
Maruti Suzuki Ciaz Safety
Along with dual airbags, ABS with EBD and brake assist, the all-new Maruti Ciaz 2018 now comes with an Electronic Stability Program (ESP) and Hill Hold Function, while co-passenger seatbelt reminder, speed alert system and reverse parking sensors are offered across the range. Maruti Suzuki Ciaz Verdict
The 2018 Ciaz facelift is an intelligent one. It wraps the Ciaz’ simple but proven package in a more emotive deal. What was once deemed a safe and predictable choice is now a car with some personality and one that makes a statement.Yes, they could’ve offered a variant with six airbags, a more pleasing petrol engine, an automatic transmission that’s more 2018 and maybe even a sunroof. But at its price, the Ciaz does undercut the competition while still giving you new reasons to consider buying one.The refresh adds to what was already a dependable choice. The good thing about the face-lifted Ciaz is that the minor styling tweaks do seem to uplift the image of the car, moving it clearly towards the more premium side of the segment. The updated petrol engine with Smart Hybrid technology claims improved fuel efficiency despite the larger displacement. So if that equates to more power and more efficiency in the real world, we’re sure that will make for happier customers.
